Edited on March 30th, 2025:
Hello like minded individuals! Over the course of the past year, I made a conscious decision to no longer live the life I once did. I knew it was time for change. I wanted to step away from my comfort zone and embrace a life that was full of new challenges, growth, and most importantly, adventures. The intention was simple: say "Yes" to opportunities, especially when my instinct was to say "No". At first, it was daunting—terrifying, even. The unknown can be a powerful force, and saying “Yes” felt like a leap of faith into uncharted territory. But as Marie Forleo wisely states, “Don’t let the fear of the unknown keep you from taking bold steps toward your goals. The greatest opportunities lie on the other side of fear.”
And so, I stepped forward. With each day, each challenge, I learned to push past my fears. Every small step taken was a victory. It wasn’t easy. There were days I stumbled, moments when I doubted myself, and times when it felt like I wasn’t making any progress. But every small action added up. I had to remind myself that change doesn’t happen overnight. The Roman Empire wasn’t built in a day, and neither was I. The transformation I sought required time, patience, and the willingness to embrace discomfort.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in this journey is that growth often comes from embracing discomfort. When we challenge ourselves to step outside of what we know, we make room for progress. Whether it's tackling a long-held fear, starting a new project, or simply learning to say “Yes” when we’d rather retreat, every experience builds on the last. With each step, I became more aware of the power that resides in choosing to take action, even when that action feels uncertain.
As I worked through my goals, many of which had once seemed too far out of reach, I came to realize that there was no perfect moment to start—there was only the moment I was in. Progress is not about perfection; it’s about showing up, one step at a time.
Here’s a look at the journey I’ve taken so far—the challenges I’ve faced, the growth I’ve experienced, and the moments that have truly inspired me:
As I look back on my journey of stepping outside my comfort zone, one of the most delightful aspects has been the food experiences. In the pursuit of new adventures, I didn’t just seek personal growth and challenge; I also explored new tastes, flavors, and culinary experiences that expanded my horizons in ways I never imagined. Trying new foods has taught me that growth often happens through unexpected avenues—like the bite of something unfamiliar, or the discovery of a dish that quickly becomes a new favorite.
Here's a closer look at the new foods and restaurants that helped fuel my adventure:
1) New Foods Tried:
Homemade Banana Bread – A comforting classic, but the homemade touch brought out flavors I didn’t know I’d been missing.
Sushiza-Box – A creative fusion of sushi and a box that reinvents convenience dining.
Conch – This was an eye-opening experience. A true taste of the ocean that expanded my view of seafood.

Plum Wine – A beautiful balance of sweet and tart; this was my introduction to a whole new category of beverages.

Ham and Cheese Cachtio (Klein’s) – An indulgent and rich dish that made me rethink what makes comfort food truly comforting.
Iced White Vanilla Pistachio Latte (Klein’s) – A new favorite, combining the sweet and nutty flavors in a way I didn’t expect.
Iced Berry Cobbler Latte (Ludlow Charlington’s) – Like drinking a dessert; it’s amazing how the right combination of flavors can evoke the warmth of a homemade dessert in a cup.
Smoked Vanilla Mocha (Collectivo) – A perfect blend of smoothness and depth, this was a wake-up call to the nuances of flavor in coffee.
Wyman’s Fruit Cup – A refreshing change, filled with the taste of nature’s sweetness and a good reminder of how simple food can be equally satisfying.
Sugarfina’s Advent Calendar – A sweet, fun way to indulge, showing me how small treats can have a big impact on my outlook during the holidays.
2) New Restaurants Explored:
With each new dish came the opportunity to explore new places, many of which have left an indelible mark on my culinary journey. Here are the restaurants that helped broaden my perspective, offering not just food but experiences and atmospheres that added richness to my adventure:

The Jalapeno Grille – A reminder of the beauty of bold flavors and spices, where each bite was a burst of heat and excitement.
The Pasta Bowl – Comfort food done right. It was here that I rediscovered the joy of a well-made pasta dish that felt like a warm hug.
House of Hunan – A trip into bold flavors and deep, satisfying dishes that explored the true essence of Hunan cuisine.
The Clark Street Dog – A classic Chicago experience, teaching me that sometimes, the most straightforward dishes are the ones that stand the test of time.
Plenty Chinese Restaurant – A place where fresh, vibrant ingredients made each dish pop, proving that freshness is key in any great meal.
Crisp – A surprising culinary adventure where the combination of healthy and delicious was executed flawlessly.
Ranalli’s Pizza – A staple of the city, where the pizza was both familiar and comforting.
Burrito Beach – A fun, fresh take on burritos that brought a touch of California to the city, one bite at a time.As for experiences, here are some firsts:
Gel Nails for the First Time
Along with my Russian manicure, I decided to step outside my comfort zone once again and try gel nails for the first time. I had always been a fan of traditional polish and acrylics, but I had heard so many great things about gel nails—specifically their durability and sleek finish—that I thought it was time to give them a try. I must say, the results were remarkable. The polish was perfectly smooth and shiny, lasting far longer than I ever anticipated without any chipping. It’s safe to say I was hooked.
What struck me most about the experience wasn’t just how flawless the finish was, but the confidence boost I felt with the new look. There's something about taking the time for self-care, even with something as small as nails, that can really shift your mindset. It’s a reminder that even the smallest acts of self-investment can have an outsized impact on how we feel about ourselves. Whether it’s through choosing a new beauty treatment, exploring a different style, or simply carving out time for something you’ve never done before, these moments of growth shape us. They help us embrace change and remind us that we deserve to invest in ourselves.
Learning to Embrace Change and New Experiences
From trying new foods, stepping into unfamiliar restaurants, experimenting with new beauty treatments, and saying yes to things that once intimidated me, this journey has been about more than just checking things off a list. It's about the empowerment that comes from being open to growth, from taking risks, and from embracing change in all its forms. Each of these experiences—whether big or small—has allowed me to grow, learn, and rediscover parts of myself I didn’t know existed.
Every time I choose to say "yes" to something new, I’m reminded of the potential waiting just outside of my comfort zone. Life has a funny way of surprising us with gifts, lessons, and new paths when we’re willing to explore them. And while change is often intimidating, it’s through this exploration that we find our true strength and resilience.
As I continue down this path of self-discovery and growth, I encourage you to take a step back and reflect on the ways you, too, have embraced change. What have you tried that once seemed intimidating or out of reach? What new experiences are you ready to say "yes" to in the coming months? The journey might not always be easy, but the rewards—both tangible and intangible—are well worth it.
5) Learning to Apply Highlighter:
Makeup has always been an area where I kept it simple—just the basics. However, this year I decided to dive deeper into beauty trends and learn more about makeup application. One thing I tried for the first time was applying highlighter. After a quick tutorial at Sephora, I felt empowered and more confident with my makeup skills. The Sephora Collection Trio Face Palette in Gleam became my go-to for night outs, and applying highlighter now feels like an essential part of my routine. This experience was a reminder that investing in self-care and learning new skills, no matter how small, can have a big impact on how we feel about ourselves.
6) Going to the Beach Alone:
One of my most empowering moments this year was going to the beach alone. At first, the idea seemed intimidating. I worried about feeling insecure or out of place. But I decided to push through those feelings and spent the entire day soaking up the sun. That day, I learned the power of solitude and the strength that comes from being able to enjoy your own company. It was a gentle reminder that we don’t need others to validate our enjoyment or sense of peace. Sometimes, it’s about finding joy in our own company and embracing the freedom that comes with independence.
7) Putting My Feet in Lake Michigan:
After building up the courage to go to the beach alone, I took the next step: putting my feet in Lake Michigan. The cool water felt like a refreshing reward for facing my insecurities. It was simple yet powerful. I realized that sometimes, the hardest part is just starting. Once I took that initial step, the rest came naturally. This experience was a reflection of how we often hesitate to try new things because of fear or uncertainty, but once we take that first step, everything falls into place. Life is full of opportunities to wade into the unknown—sometimes all we need to do is dip our toes in.
8) Swimming Alone in the Lake:
Taking the plunge into Lake Michigan solo was another milestone. It was something I had always wanted to do, but I never had the courage to try alone. This time, I found a quiet spot, took a deep breath, and climbed in. The cold water was invigorating, and I felt a sense of accomplishment. It wasn’t just about swimming in the lake; it was about challenging myself and overcoming the fear of doing something solo. This experience showed me that growth happens when we step outside our comfort zone and trust ourselves to handle new challenges.
9) Jumping into the Lake:
Jumping into the lake felt like the culmination of all the smaller steps I had taken leading up to this moment. It was a little scary at first, especially because the edge was slippery, but the feeling of finally leaping in was exhilarating. I realized that sometimes in life, we have to take a leap of faith, even when things seem uncertain. That jump wasn’t just a physical act—it was symbolic of the larger leaps we take in our personal growth. Next summer, I plan to jump into the lake with friends, making it a shared experience, and reminding me that personal growth is even more powerful when shared with others.
10) Swimming in a Quarry:
Swimming in a quarry for the first time was an unforgettable experience. The water was crystal clear, and the environment was surreal. There were inflatable activities, rock climbing, and even a private cabana to relax in. What made the day even more special was the company I had with me. The whole experience was a reminder that some of the best moments in life come when we embrace the unknown and allow ourselves to enjoy something new. This adventure showed me how important it is to spend time outdoors, challenge ourselves physically, and most importantly, enjoy the process.
11) Nighttime Road Trip Alone:
Driving alone at night to a new destination was one of the most empowering things I did this year. As a woman traveling solo, I had to be extra cautious, but I also felt liberated by my independence. The journey wasn’t just about the destination—it was about proving to myself that I could handle anything that came my way. It taught me to trust my instincts, prepare for the unexpected, and stay focused. Sometimes, the greatest moments of growth happen when we step into unfamiliar territory and trust ourselves to navigate it.
12) Staying on a Military Base:
Staying on a military base was an eye-opening experience. I got to learn about the life of those who serve, as well as the daily routines and challenges they face. It was a humbling experience that reminded me of the importance of appreciating different lifestyles and perspectives. The hospitality of my friends and the lessons I learned from their experiences made me more grateful and open-minded. This experience also showed me the value of stepping into someone else's world and learning from it.
13) Hiking at Mark Twain National Forest:
Hiking at Mark Twain National Forest and seeing a natural spring for the first time was a truly peaceful and grounding experience. It was a reminder of the beauty that nature offers and the power it has to calm our minds. The clear water of the natural spring and the surrounding beauty left me feeling refreshed and connected to the earth. Sometimes, we need to step outside and reconnect with nature to regain our perspective and remind ourselves of what’s truly important.
14) Letting My Hairstylist Have Creative Freedom:
Allowing my hairstylist to choose my hair color and style was a liberating experience. I had always been so particular about my hair, but this time I decided to let go and trust her expertise. The result was better than I could have imagined. This experience taught me that sometimes, the best outcomes come when we relinquish control and trust those around us. It’s a reminder that growth often happens when we stop micromanaging every detail and allow the process to unfold naturally.
15) Improving My Excel Skills:
This year, I made the decision to invest in my professional growth, starting with learning Excel more effectively. I signed up for the LinkedIn course “Excel: Introduction to Formulas and Functions,” and it turned out to be one of the best choices I made. The course taught me how to streamline my workflow and organize data efficiently, which has made me feel more confident in my abilities at work. I’m now excited to continue learning and expand my skill set with more courses, not just in Excel, but in a variety of areas. The journey of continuous learning has opened my eyes to the power of acquiring new skills and how it can boost both my career and personal growth.
16) Taking the WordPress LinkedIn Assessment:
In my pursuit of personal and professional development, I also took the WordPress LinkedIn Assessment. While some of the questions were challenging, my experience as a blogger on the platform helped me power through. I was beyond proud to finish in the top 15%. This experience taught me that the knowledge we gain over time—through practical experience—can carry us further than we realize. It was an affirmation that learning doesn’t always have to come from textbooks or structured courses. Sometimes, it’s about applying what we already know and allowing that to propel us forward.
17) Discovering Shadow Journaling:
While scrolling through TikTok one day, I stumbled upon a trend called "Shadow Journaling" and felt compelled to learn more. The concept was fascinating: delving into the parts of ourselves that we often avoid in the name of personal growth. As Brooks Manley describes it, "Shadow Journaling is a powerful practice for self-reflection and personal growth." After diving into it, I found it to be incredibly insightful. It helped me tap into aspects of myself that I had previously ignored or suppressed. Shadow journaling was both challenging and enlightening, but it was an invaluable tool for self-discovery, teaching me that sometimes we need to face our hidden selves to reach our fullest potential.
18) Talking to Strangers:
One of the more uncomfortable experiences I had to tackle was talking to strangers. Initially, I found it intimidating to approach someone I didn’t know, whether for small talk or asking for assistance. But over time, I pushed myself to initiate conversations, even if it was just to ask a question or engage in casual chatter. Eventually, talking to strangers became second nature. The more I practiced, the more comfortable I became. This experience showed me how breaking down social barriers doesn’t have to be a grand gesture—it’s about the small moments of connection that add up. It's now a part of my life that I don’t think twice about, and I feel more open and confident in social settings.
19) Confronting My Fear of Heights:
New fears have emerged for me along this journey—one of them being a fear of heights. As a child, I loved being up high, but as I got older, the awareness of the risks involved started to create anxiety. I first noticed this change when I jumped off a medium platform at a quarry, and I was overwhelmed with fear at the height. Later, I experienced a drop while rock climbing that sent me into a brief moment of panic. The feeling of free-falling before the rope caught me was unsettling. Despite the safety measures in place, my mind was consumed with what could go wrong. Still, I’m proud to say I faced my fear in both instances. This experience taught me that it’s okay to have fears; it’s how we handle them and face them head-on that defines our strength.
20) Facing My Fear of Elevators:
Another fear I had to confront was my fear of elevators, which became more intense after an unsettling experience. One day, I was riding an elevator when it started making strange noises and jerking unexpectedly. The ride left me shaken, and I spent the next few weeks avoiding elevators altogether, opting for the stairs instead. However, I knew I couldn’t let fear control me forever. I decided to start using elevators again, putting trust in the safety mechanisms that are built into modern systems. It’s a work in progress, but I’m determined to face this fear, one ride at a time. This journey has shown me that facing fears head-on often requires patience and trust in the process, whether it’s with elevators or anything else in life.
21) Witnessing a Tornado:
One of the most surreal experiences I’ve had recently was witnessing a tornado with a friend during the summer. The night started like any other, but then the sky turned ominous, and the storm came roaring in. The power of nature was both terrifying and awe-inspiring. I’ve never experienced anything like it before. That night gave me a new perspective on life and nature's force. It was a reminder that life is unpredictable, and sometimes, we’re forced to face the raw power of nature. But it also left me feeling more connected to the world around me, understanding the importance of respecting and embracing the unpredictability of life.
22) Discovering the Chicago Tree Project:
While in Chicago, I stumbled across an unusual sight— a lemon perched on top of a tree trunk. Initially confused, I later learned that this was part of the Chicago Tree Project, an initiative where dead trees are repurposed into sculptures by artists. The artist behind this particular piece, Irene Hoppenberg, uses lemons in her works to symbolize longing—for the south, the sun, and light. The sculpture, which reflects on climate change and the future of living beings, made me think deeply about the responsibility we all share for the environment. Irene's words stayed with me: “The future of all living beings is the responsibility of each individual human and is defined by his actions.” It was a powerful reminder that even art has the power to spark reflection and action on the issues that affect us all.
23) The Birdhouse Tree:
During my time exploring the city, I stumbled upon something truly unique—the Birdhouse Tree. It was a dying oak tree adorned with countless birdhouses, creating a whimsical scene. Honestly, I lost count of how many birdhouses were attached to it. This art installation, titled Nestful, was created by artist Emily Moorhead-Wallace. The concept behind it is beautiful: the tree, though dying, has become a sanctuary for migratory birds and insects. It's a reminder of the resilience of nature and how art can take something seemingly imperfect and transform it into something vibrant and full of life.
24) The Hidden Lily Pond:
One of the most serene and unexpected discoveries was the hidden Lily Pond near the Lincoln Park Zoo. On a walk in the spring, I came across an opening in a gate-linked fence, and out of curiosity, I ventured through. It led me to a peaceful pond, tucked away from the usual city noise, surrounded by towering green trees and blooming flowers. The pond was alive with clusters of lily pads, turtles lounging on logs, and people sitting quietly, absorbing nature's pure tranquility. In that moment, it was like stepping into another world—a peaceful escape from the fast-paced city life. It reminded me of the importance of finding hidden moments of stillness and beauty in our everyday routines.
25) Lincoln Park Park:
One of the gems of the city that I didn’t explore until 2023 was Lincoln Park (not to be confused with the zoo or the neighborhood). Lincoln Park Park is home to soccer fields, basketball courts, softball fields, walking paths, and the Ulysses S. Grant monument, among other attractions like Nestful and the Lemon Tree. Whenever I talk about it, I jokingly call it "Lincoln Park Park" to make sure there's no confusion. The park was a great place to escape to and enjoy nature in the midst of the city, offering a bit of everything for those seeking recreation, peace, or simply a new perspective on the urban landscape.
26) Experiencing Major City Events:
2023 also marked the year I finally ventured out to experience several iconic Chicago events that I had never attended before. These included the Chicago Marathon, the Pride Parade, and the Air and Water Show. Each event had its own energy and vibe, and attending them was an eye-opening experience. It was thrilling to be part of something bigger than myself, to witness the power of community, and to see how diverse and inclusive the city can be. These events helped me feel more connected to the city I live in and reminded me of the importance of embracing new experiences and celebrating the things that make each place special.
27) Independence: A Journey of Self-Discovery
For a long time, I found myself hesitant to venture out on my own. The thought of attending events or exploring new places without someone by my side made me feel uneasy. More often than not, I’d reach out to a friend or family member, hoping they could accompany me. It wasn’t until I deliberately pushed myself to take on activities alone that I started to feel a shift. As I began to embrace solitude, I discovered a new layer of strength and resilience within myself. The solitude became empowering, and the world, once intimidating, opened up in ways I never expected. Sometimes, the best company you can have is your own.
28) Confidence: Uncovering Your True Potential
When I reflect on my younger self, I realize how much my confidence was influenced by the opinions of others. I wasn’t always sure of myself, and insecurity often held me back. Yet, over time, through the pursuit of my passions and the dedication to achieving my personal goals, I started to see a transformation. Confidence doesn’t come overnight; it’s a byproduct of consistent action and self-belief. As I started reaching milestones, no matter how small, I realized that I was capable of so much more than I had initially believed. Confidence grew from the inside out, rooted in the realization that my worth was not dependent on external validation, but on my own growth.
29) Letting Go: Embracing Freedom
Letting go is one of the most challenging aspects of personal growth. I’m still learning, and it’s a process I continue to navigate. For a long time, I held on to the idea of perfection—whether it was in relationships or in my own expectations of myself. I placed others on pedestals, seeking approval and validation. But as time passed, I learned that peace comes from releasing those burdens. Now, I understand that I can only control my own actions, not the reactions or choices of others. Letting go has been liberating; it’s allowed me to move forward, unencumbered by the weight of things that are beyond my control. I am still a work in progress, but I now understand that true freedom lies in letting go of what no longer serves me.
30) Growth: The Subtle Power of Progress
In the beginning, when I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, I didn’t notice any major changes. Growth is often subtle, almost imperceptible, but with time, the changes became undeniable. Each new experience, each challenge faced, added another layer to who I was becoming. Now, when I look back, I realize how much I have evolved—emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually. Growth isn’t always immediate, but it’s inevitable when you commit to the journey. The process may not always be linear, but it’s this very process that shapes us into the person we’re destined to be.
Reflecting on the past year, I am overwhelmed by the lessons, challenges, and moments of inspiration that have shaped my path. But this is just the beginning. The journey of self-discovery is continuous, and I’m excited to keep pushing myself further. I invite you to join me in this journey—to step out of your comfort zone, to embrace independence, and to face your fears head-on. The rewards of growth, confidence, and freedom are worth every leap of faith. In the end, you’ll look back and realize that the person you’ve become is far beyond what you ever imagined. Take the first step—your future self will thank you for it.
