The Night Before

Small decorated Christmas tree with lights and ornaments placed on a table with a festive background.

Editor’s note: This post will continue to evolve as I do.

Welcome, tonight I’m taking you back. To white rituals, newly forgotten sparkles, and the little things that make the season feel like something more.

December 1st was always one of the most exciting days of the year growing up. Why? It kicked off the countdown to every kid’s favorite season: the holidays. And that meant one thing, calendars. But not just any kind of calendar’s, only my favorite kind.

There was a stretch where I might’ve been “too old” for them, either by my own declaration or my parents. But in the last few years, I've brought the tradition back to life. A couple years ago, I devoured Sugarfina’s candy-filled calendar. This year? I’m traveling the world one piece of candy at a time with Universal Yums 24 day global tasting box.

If you still haven’t guessed, yes, I’m talking about advent calendars. They usually have a timeframe of 24 or 25 days long, consisting of either little boxes, drawers, or pouches that can contain anything, such as: necklaces, money, candy, notes, and so much more. It seems advent calendars have quite popular lately. I even saw a clip of Mythical Morning trying out a bunch of different ones. Plus, there seems to be so many different ones these days for: tealovers, skincare addicts, even hot sauce fanatics. You can find it all.

Another long standing tradition from my childhood is one with German roots. One that involves a mysterious green food-shaped ornament. Any guesses?

It’s the Christmas pickle. For as long as I can remember, one would get hidden somewhere on the tree. Whoever spotted it first earned a small prize or extra gift. I’m not sure who started it in our family but it felt like it existed long before I did. My grandparents definitely kept the magic going. As the youngest, I have to admit… I may have had a bit of an edge.

Then, there’s the classic of decking out the house. The tree, lights, stockings by the chimney, pine-scented decor, the whole deal. Even if I haven’t had a full size tree in recent years, the urge to add a little festive flair never fully leaves.

And of course, the honorary light tradition. Cruising neighborhoods to admire other people’s holiday handiwork. From fun blow ups and dripping icicle lights to color-changing displays and outdoor decorated trees, it’s like a community art exhibit in motion.

To spread a little extra warmth this season, I’m giving away a festive hot chocolate ornament. Because what’s more comforting than cocoa at Christmastime? Whether it hangs on your tree or sits on your desk, it’s a small reminder to slow down and savor the season. Keep reading for how to enter!

To enter in the giveaway, all you have to do is like “The Night Before” post and tag one person on Inspire Those Who Inspire You’s: Facebook (Facebook.com/itwiy) or Instagram (@inspire.those.who.inspire.you) to be entered in the raffle to win.

The giveaway will run from Monday, December 22nd through Sunday, December 28th, 2025. And to make it extra special, I’ll be waiting to paint the mug portion until after the winner is chosen, so it can reflect your favorite color or a little personal touch. I’m also happy to add a short message, whether it’s the date, “Merry Christmas,” or something meaningful to you.

One of my favorite traditions though? Celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve. That’s the day I spend with my mom, and honestly, it’s the one I cherish the most. It wasn’t born out of religion or cultural beliefs. It’s one that happened when my parents divorced and I, then, had to split up the holiday. But, I, personally wouldn’t change it for the world.

Last but not least, dolls. Barbie dolls, to be exact. It has been a tradition throughout my life. Why or how it started? I’m not quite sure, but I love it just the same. Each year a barbie doll ornament gets added to my collection, and I couldn’t be more delighted. It’s just one of those things that feels special, the more often it occurs.

As I’ve gotten older, some traditions have faded, and a new few ones have taken root. But they all share the same purpose: connection, joy, and a little bit of sparkle.

What about you? What traditions have stuck with you, or evolved over time?

Wishing you a Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!
